Plot:⤵
Ra Eun Ho (Kim Sejeong) is a spunky, cute and bright girl who is a talented artist. She realizes that the high school that she attends is not supportive to students like her who do not have great grades, rich parents or connections in high places. She is also ranked very low amongst the other students in her class. Despite her very low ranking, she has dreams of being a webtoon artist and to attend the same university as her crush.

Her BFF, Oh Sa Rang (Park Se Wan), is the daughter of the school janitor. She has determined that she will not attend university and would rather be a civil servant to make money to help her mother. She is preparing for the civil service exam and spends her time studying to pass it.

The moody Hyun Tae Won (Kim Jung Hyun) has a wealthy father who is an investor in the high school. Tae Won is also the future director of the school. Due to this, the teachers turn a blind eye when it comes to his bad attitude, poor grades and violent bursts.
It appears as if the children of wealthy families get the best education that money can buy, with expensive study materials, private tutors and prep courses. They even appear to be connected with ways of finding the questions for future exams.

Song Dae Hwi (Jang Dong Yoon) is top in his class, in fact he is always Number 1. We soon discover that he is poor and has a mother who is an alcoholic and spends all of their money. He begins tutoring rich kids,
like Kim Hui Chan (Kim Hee Chan) to help him pay for his bills and to go to college. Kim Hui Chan has dark secrets of his own that he tries to keep at bay especially with always coming in second place.

Dae Hwi is also dating the beautiful Hong Nam Joo (Seol In Ah) who also appears to have a secret. She is pretty, smart, and seems to really like Dae Hwi. Unfortunately it seems as if she is craving his attention all the time.

When a mysterious student, "X" begins causing trouble at the high school, Eun Ho is wrongfully accused. She is blackmailed by the school principal and is instructed to catch the real culprit if she wants to clear her own name.

Review:⤵
I have to start by saying that I am not a huge fan of High School Dramas. I sometimes find them to be immature with a lack of character development. Additionally, I sometimes find the characters on either end of an extreme spectrum.
The first episode of School 2017 was very interesting. I thought the premise was very clever. I liked the dynamic right away between Eun Ho and Tae Won. Almost immediately, you could tell that he was developing feelings for her although he would annoy her.
I absolutely shipped Eun Ho and Tae Won and believe that actors Kim Sejeong and Kim Jung Hyun both have a promising future ahead. They were TOO adorable for words. Their relationship reminded me of the innocence of high school. Unfortunately, the lack of a deeper romantic connection in my opinion hurt the drama.
I wanted to like this drama so badly. In fact, I found myself rooting for "X".
There were also some questions that I had that went unanswered. What happened to Tae Won's mother? Why was Tae Won's father so abusive? Why wasn't there a stop to the school violence?Who actually wrote the note to Eun Ho that Dae Hwi and Tae Won was not at the assembly on the day that "X" did what he did? Why wasn't the teacher fired for lying on an official record concerning the students? What was the purpose of the Han Soo Ji? Why was Mr. Sim so blinded by the kids? When did Mr. Sim discover the real identity of "X"? When did he tell Soo Ji? Why was the school so corrupt? Why was Dae Hwi's mother like that? What happened to his father? Why was Hui Chan so abusive? Why didn't he get reported? And the most important question for me, what happened to a deeper romantic connection between Eun Ho and Tae Won?
I don't know about you, but I am not watching a drama for 16 episodes just because I like the characters. It is quite appropriate for 18 year olds to share romantic scenes.
I also thought that the adults were extreme, and why was Mr. Sim's relationship with Han Soo Ji so immature. It lacked substance of a real adult relationship. That's why for me, School 2017 was a bit unrealistic.
There were some elements in this drama that was very good. The writers did have a good way with having us empathize with the characters. I also liked how everyone seemed to have a deep dark secret that was discovered in later episodes.

3.5 ⭐⭐⭐🟄
I thought the character development in this drama was good. Unfortunately I was left with too many unanswered questions which affected my rating. I might recommend this drama if someone is looking for a High School Drama or a drama with Oppa Kim Jung Hyung as he did a really great job portraying a broken, lost and misunderstood, highschooler.
